Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Man City Links as Pure Rumour
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent reports connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, addressed the ongoing rumours about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions Following Recent Comments
Maresca's latest comments come in the wake of he described a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had fueled considerable speculation of a potential rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton media session, no."
The manager however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club next season and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa later this month.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an unhealed issue that continues to create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, leaving the disagreement unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's press conferences has become notably awkward, raising concerns it could undermine what has up to now been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field position is positive: they are fourth in the Premier League, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable Champions League draw with good performances in their remaining games.
The prevailing question is whether this off-field situation might begin to disrupt a squad that was just starting to appear cohesive.
