Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
